Bright Blogging Days

I’ve been thinking about how I can be more active on my blog, and create more of a presence for myself in the blogging world. I’m good at thinking up ideas, but then procrastinate until the cows come home. This has resulted in some big time lapses between posts.

One of the reasons for this is that I’ve been trying to work out my niche – where I fit in the blogosphere. It occurred to me today, however, that I don’t need a niche to write. I’m interested in lots of different things, therefore I want to write about different things. I originally intended this to be my log of sunbeams – little moments of pleasure in an unpredictable world. I then went off on a tangent and had a wee rant about some issues that bother me. So I expanded my original intentions and included rants too! As a mum of four, I have a lot going on – all day, every day. My children love to learn, be it through playtime, crafts, reading, food, television and more. I also have a lot of interests: sewing, knitting, crochet, baking, reading, cocktails (yes, it is a legit interest), education, eco-living, spirituality, gardening…

And so I expanded yet again… This shouldn’t surprise me, as I’ve always had a bit of an eclectic personality. Music, books, fashion – I like a wide range of everything.

So how do I fit all of this into one blog? Simple – different instalments on different days:

  • Mags’ Monday Musings – a longer post, detailing whichever sunbeam or rant that has caught my attention that week.
  • Whimsical Wednesdays – usually a list of whatever takes my fancy (oh I do so love a list!), or details of any seasonal antics that my family have been up to.
  • Follow Friday – a round up of some fellow bloggers that have caught my attention.

So there we have it. My plan to stay active in the blogging world. It may expand again, but that’s ok. If we’re not constantly expanding our thoughts and ideas, we’re at risk of stagnating – and that’s not what I want. Stay tuned for more alliterative/sibilant/assonant titles!

  1. Itโ€™s very freeing to realize that you donโ€™t have to limit yourself in the (blogging) world ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I struggled with that when I thought about starting a blog…and, like you, couldnโ€™t find a niche. So I stopped trying, put โ€˜Hodgepodgeโ€™ in my name – problem solved ๐Ÿ˜

  2. I agree that you shouldn’t have to define a niche if you are simply writing for the enjoyment of it. I started out trying to write about personal finance, because those were the blogs I was reading at the time. But quickly my eco-fanatism started creeping out along with my love for crafts and sustainability. And I think that is ok. After all, if you don’t enjoy it, you won’t be writing. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Exactly – I started it for me. Almost like an online diary. I kept diaries in my teens, and if I still had them I’d see a huge difference in what I was writing about then to what I’m writing about now. As we evolve, so do our thoughts and ideas. A year from now my focus may have changed yet again – which is fine, as long as I’m still writing!

  3. Love it! I too struggled with this when I first started my first blog. As a result I ended up starting a new blog because I just wasn’t writing what I wanted, I think I was trying to write what I thought others wanted to read.
Now my new blog doesn’t get too many updates, and that’s ok with me too. I write what I want, and its all for me ๐Ÿ™‚ *although I wont lie, I love it when others enjoy it too*

    1. Snap! I started my blog for me, but found I was trying so hard to write for others, thinking about what people might like to read (or not read), as well as trying not to replicate anything that had already been said by other bloggers. Then I thought about how many different posts I’ve read on cloth nappies – all saying similar things, but with their own twist. I’ve decided to just write what I want to write – it may be similar to plenty of other blogs out there, but it will be in MY style, from MY point of view – if people want to read it, woohoo! If they don’t, that’s fine too.
*Watch this space for a cloth nappy post! ๐Ÿ˜*
